About Us

Lord Tennyson’s immortal line is perhaps the most succinct expression of the dauntless spirit with which Dinabandhu Mahavidyalaya has been continuing its journey ever since its inception in the summer of 1947, the annus mirabilis of Indian history. In its illustrious existence of 68 years, Dinabandhu Mahavidyalaya has been braving odds with unrelenting determination, buoyed up by the unwavering focus on its prime objective of imparting true enlightenment to young minds. The institution has been serving the highly significant role of providing quality higher education to the largely middle and lower-middle class population of the town of Bongaon and its rural vicinity.

In retrospect, the college boasts of the historic fact that its name is inseparably linked with three of the most illustrious sons of the soil of early twentieth-century -- Dinabandhu Mitra, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyaya, and Rakhaldas Bandyopadhyaya. It was the urgency of the establishment of an institution of higher learning in the region felt by these three luminaries and their concerted efforts to that effect that led to the birth of this institution.

However, with time and the ever-changing demands of students, Dinabandhu Mahavidyalaya has been adding myriad dimensions to the conventional mode of education. The introduction of postgraduate course (in Bengali), distance education initiatives, introduction of newer disciplines of study from time to time, audio-visual classrooms equipped with sophisticated projectors and acoustics, a state-of-the-art seminar room, a spacious auditorium, thorough computerisation of its library, and installation of computers in all its departments as well as the office are some of the diversifications done in the recent past. In the very near future, Dinabandhu Mahavidyalaya aspires to provide honours in its existing Computer Science stream and introduce Sociology and Physical Education among the subjects of study it offers. The necessary approval in this regard has been obtained from the affiliating University and these courses will start from 2015-16 academic session.

In spite of all the aforementioned diversifications and improvisations we at Dinabandhu Mahavidyalaya firmly believe that this institution still has, as Robert Frost said, ‘miles to go’. Keeping in mind the fact that there is still much room left for improvement, Dinabandhu Mahavidyalaya shall be adapting itself to the new challenges that it will be facing in the upcoming years and implementing the changes that the future will necessitate.
